DUS group- In view of the schedule below, I need your DRDF proposals in final form in my hands by *** 3 PM Friday Aug 31. *** That is THIS Friday. Note that you need 2 copies and attachments, and a yellow concurence sheet. I will be happy to look over earlier drafts. If you really need the weekend, talk to me. I will be teaching 9-12 in Camarillo Tuesday, so we will need to get together over the weekend if you cant get it to me by Friday. We dont have Tuesday morning. Also, if you cant get the final draft to me by Friday, I will need to know at a minimum the title, and your co-investigators and the category (seed effort, or major area of emphasis). Ken ===== Dear GSs and Section Staff - I've spoken with Rich Doyle about the approval process for DRDF proposals for this year and agreed on the following deadline for inputs in order to obtain Section and Division approval in time to meet the September 7 due date to the Chief Scientist's office. To help Andrea and me plan the week of 9/5, please send me a list of your Group's planned proposals as soon as possible, but no later than COB Friday, 8/31. You may fill in the attached spreadsheet and return it electronically. As always, Rich and I have tried to give you and your people as much time as possible, compressing our review time and performing the Section review and Division reviews in parallel. You should consider the following deadline HARD. Early delivery is ok; late deliveries will probably not be approved. Provide two (2) copies of GS-approved proposals, with all attachments, and yellow concurrence sheet, to Section office no later than: Noon, Tuesday, 9/4 Remember that Monday is a holiday (Labor Day). If you wish me to review a draft of your proposal earlier than than Tuesday, please get it to me by Friday, 8/31, COB. It should be at least at the "90% complete" level for this option. Tuesday Noon deadline will still apply for complete GS-approved version. GSs: remember that your signature on a proposal means that it is technically accurate, professionally written in clear English, has well-defined deliverables, and is aligned with the research thrust of your Group and of the Section. Do not sign "near-final" drafts. You'll need to set your own earlier Group-internal deadline to assure that proposals reach you in enough time that you will be able to iterate as necessary to produce a set of proposals you can put your signature on. If a proposal doesn't meet your standards, don't approve it - the next proposal from that particular group member will likely be better written and more timely. Only forward to Section and Division the proposals on which you're comfortable staking your credibility. Staff: judge yourself as if you were your own GS and follow the guidance and procedure above. My signature means that I concur with the proposal's alignment with Section direction and the overall quality of the proposal. Rich Doyle's signature means that he concurs with the proposal's alignment with the Division direction, overall proposal quality and that the Division will support the necessary workforce for the work if it is funded. If you have any questions, please call or reply or bring it up in Section Staff tomorrow. Sincerely, Ann
